Old Aberdeen Mission

Sunday 27th February 2005

Theme: Being set free

Aim:  to understand and experience the freedom available in Christ.

Key verse: “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (Jn 8:32)

Reading: Galatians 5:13-26

Psalm: Psalm 40

1. First session

Remind folk of the story of Moses and the ten plagues in Egypt. Have a quiz to see people can remember what the plagues were, and the right order. Use Powerpoint pen pointer to write up the answers, and at the end to show the right answers.

Points to draw out:

2. Song

Off Goes Moses

3. Second session

Illustrate the way in which sin can bind us, by using cotton thread. Tie a volunteer with one loop of thread and see if he can break it. Keep doubling the number of loops. After a few times he will find it impossible to break free.

Points to emphasise

Prisoners of Satan. Enslaved to Sin. Helpless.

God's judgement on Sin. Jesus is the Way of Escape. We must put our Faith in Him.

God Makes us Sons. We all Share His inheritance.

Cinderella didn’t return home! The things that bind us The fears that trouble us. The freedom that is ours by right.

Response

Encourage people to ask God to show them if there is any area of their lives in which they need to know His deliverance and freedom. Encourage them to pray for deliverance and believe His word: “If the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed” (Jn 8:36).
