Additional Information
Elizabeth Florence’s daughter Dorothy Freak recorded some childhood memories of visiting her grandmother Lucy Townsend. She particularly mentioned the Rope Ground nearby. The house at 113 New Church Street, Bermondsey, where Lucy lived in 1901, was a stone’s throw from a Rope Walk, unlike her next house at 51 Silwood Street, Rotherhithe, where she was living from summer 1909. Dorothy, too, lived close by in Bermondsey, in different houses, at least until 1915. So it seems likely that Lucy remained at 113 New Church Street possibly until spring 1909, and that Dorothy visited her there as a young child. A Rotherhithe Blog gives much interesting information about the Rope Walks of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. There is a record of the death of another Lucy Townsend in Wandsworth, London, April-June 1916 (BMD index vol 1d, p 740). However, her stated age at death was 77, which makes her birth year 1839 approximately. This death record is that of Lucy Gere (b 1839) who married William Townsend, gardener, in 1867, and who lived variously in Wandsworth, East Grinstead and Nutfield.
