In the Name of God Amen

I John Bartholomew of Egham in the County of Surry yeoman do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following First I give devise and bequeath unto my loving Brother Francis Bartholomew and Thomas Johnston of Staines in the County of Middlesex draper all my real and personal Estate whatsoever to hold to them their Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns for ever upon the Trusts following that is to say upon Trust to sell the same for the best prices that can be gotten as soon as conveniently may be after my decease and pay one fifth part of the amount thereof unto my loving Wife Ann Bartholomew and the remaining four fifth parts thereof to place out at interest and the produce thereof to apply for and towards the maintenance Education and bringing up my four children John Ann Francis and Mary until they shall severally attain the age of twenty one years and on their severally attaining that age upon Trust to pay such four fifth parts of the amount of my said Estate with the accumulated proceed thereof if any unto my said Children Equally or to the lawfull Issue of such of them who may chance to die before the attaining that age who I direct shall be entitled in equal degree to the share his her or their Father or Mother would if living have become entitled to and if either of my said Children should die before attaining that age and without lawfull Issue then I direct the share or shares of him her or them so dying shall go to and by paid unto the survivors and survivor of them share and share alike But if all my said Children shall chance to die before attaining the age of twenty one years and without lawfull Issue I then direct the whole of my said Estates with the accumulated proceed thereof if any be paid unto my loving Wife Ann if she shall survive my said Children But if she shall not then be living In Trust as to the whole of my said Estate for my Brother and Sisters their Executors Administrators and Assigns share and share alike And I direct that the Receipts of my said Trustees shall be sufficient discharges to the purchasers of my Estates and appoint my said Brother Francis Bartholomew and Thomas Johnston Executors of this my Will and direct them to reimburse themselves out of the said Trust Estate all Cost and Charge they shall be put unto in the Execution hereof and that they shall not be answerable for any of the Trust Money that may chance to be lost unless it be by their wilfull neglect and that one of them shall not be answerable for the Acts of the other but each for his own Act only In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirtieth day of June one thousand seven hundred and seventy four  John Bartholomew  Signed sealed and declared by the said John Bartholomew as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us  Robt Mackason, Andrew Mackason, Wm Coventry.

A Codicil to be annexed to and taken as part of the last Will and Testament of me John Bartholomew of Egham in the County of Surry yeoman Whereas I have by my last Will dated the thirtieth day of June last given my real and personal Estate to my loving Brother Francis Bartholomew and Thomas Johnston upon the Trusts therein mentioned I direct and impower my said Trustees to make use of such part of the four fifths of my Estate by my said Will given unto my Children as their discretion shall judge necessary for placing them out Apprentices from time to time in conjunction with my loving Wife in case the savings out of the Interest of such four fifths of my Estate should not be sufficient for that purpose and I direct the shares of my said Children shall be paid them as soon as they shall respectively attain the age of twenty one years and in all other things I ratify and confirm my said Will dated this third day of July one thousand seven hundred and seventy four  John Bartholomew  Signed and sealed in the presence of Robt Mackason, Andrew Mackason, Wm Coventry.

This Will was proved at London with a codicil annexed this twenty third day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy four before the Worshipfull Francis Simpson Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Worshipfull Sir George Hay Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of Francis Bartholomew the Brother of the deceased and Thomas Johnston the Executors named in the said Will to whom Administration of all and Singular the Goods Chattells and Credits of the said deceased was granted they having been first sworn duly to Administer.

Thomas Johnston was brother-in-law to John Bartholomew.
