Additional Information

Robert and Ann’s daughters between them produced at least 7 illegitimate children. This was extraordinary for that society. It is not clear whether this transpired because of lack of restraint on the part of the children, or whether they were victims of systematic abuse.

Sarah was unmarried when she gave birth to a daughter, Susannah, in Feb 1841. Susannah is included with Robert and Ann’s family in the 1841 census return, and with Sarah and her husband John Burton in 1851. Susannah’s birth certificate and baptism record show her father as being Charles Slaney, possibly Sarah’s own brother. Sarah and Charles are recorded as being spinster and bachelor on their respective marriage certificates in 1847.

Mary was unmarried when she gave birth to a daughter, Lydia Sarah, in 1846, and when she gave birth to a daughter, Ann, in 1851. No father was named on the baptism records. Mary proceeded to marry Henry Goldstraw in 1853. Ann is recorded as Henry’s stepdaughter in the 1861 census return. Lydia Sarah is very likely the grand-daughter, Sarah, listed on Robert’s and Ann’s 1851 census return.

Fanny was unmarried when she gave birth to a son, Samuel Walter, in 1849. No father was named on the baptism record. Later she married Charles Bennett in 1851. Samuel Walter was listed as Charles’ son, with the name Walter, in the 1861 census return. On his marriage certificate, in 1871, he used the name Samuel Walter Slaney, and entered Charles Bennett, labourer, as his father. This probably meant step-father, not natural father, particularly since Samuel Walter consistently used the surname Slaney.

Charlotte was unmarried when she gave birth to a son, Samuel, in 1851. No father was named on the baptism record. Samuel died in 1852, age six months. Charlotte married Thomas Gaunt in 1853.

Jane was unmarried when she gave birth to a son, Thomas, in 1860 and when she gave birth to a daughter, Mary Anne, in 1869. No father was named on the baptism records. Jane, along with Thomas and Mary, are recorded as living with her father and her brother, John, in 1871.
