Additional Information Elias Ponsford Tolman was a widower when he married Jane Townsend. His first wife was also Jane – Jane Rose, and they had a child Emma Catherine in 1834. Emma Catherine did not marry, and died in Lewisham in 1920. Like many in the extended Townsend family Elias Ponsford Tolman was a lighternan. In 1851 the widow Jane Tolman lived with her mother Clara in Butcher Row, Deptford. In 1861 she lived with her sister Elizabeth and her husband in Broomfields, Deptford. In 1871 she lived with her daughter Catherine and her husband in Glebe Terrace, Rotherhithe.
