Entering the Land of God’s Provision
Reading: Joshua 1: 1-11
As we reach the end of 2023 and start a new year we look back to reflect on some of the significant events of this past year, and look ahead to what might we might experience in 2024. For some of us the most significant event of this past year have been sad or difficult times. Others of us look back at occasions that have given us great joy. For some of us the coming year has big things that we are anticipating, such as moving home or school of place of work. For others of us the year ahead is just a blank page, full of uncertainties. As a church we look back at times that have challenged and tested us, but also we are now looking forward to a new chapter in which some things of the past lie behind us and new opportunities are opening before us.
This passage we have read from the book of Joshua tells us of a time of tremendous change for the people of Israel. For hundreds of years they had been held captive in the land of Egypt, forced to carry out the will of their captors. Then, having been set free from slavery they had still wandered for years in a wilderness region, finding no place to settle and live. But now a new chapter lay before them. Opportunities as yet unseen awaited them. But at the same time things that could intimidate and frighten them lay ahead. The land they were about to enter was full of giants. These giants had caused them to turn back many years before; they were still there awaiting them.
So God spoke words to their leader, Joshua, to re-assure them and encourage them. These things stand out in the words God shared with them.
1. Put the past behind you.
“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the River Jordan” Joshua 1: 2.
2. Trust God to supply your needs and fulfil His promises.
“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses” (Joshua 1: 3)
3. Believe that God will be with you.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Joshua 1: 5)
4. Be confident and bold.
“Be strong and very courageous.” (Joshua 1: 7)
5. Remain faithful to God’s word.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.” (Joshua 1: 8)
