Theme: God's Own People
Reading
Gen 22:1-23
Recap & Introduction
Last Sunday we considered God's promise to Abraham. We considered what God's
promise meant for him and for us. In particular changed names, changed
plans and changed destiny.
God is transforming us into what He wants us to be. We must avoid taking
the initiative out of God's hands and trying to do
His work in our own way?
1. Testing
Gen 22:1,2. God tested
Abraham by putting His finger on that which was dearest to him. God transforms
His people by testing them and purifying them. As gold is refined by melting it
to separate off the dross, so we are exposed to the heat of God's refining. 2
Cor 3:18,4:10,17.
2. Sacrifice
Gen 22:2. God requires us to set
aside that which is dearest to us so that we will love Him first and most.
Abraham's future destiny, and the fulfillment of all God's promises were bound
up in Isaac. God was teaching Abraham that more important than these things was
Abraham's love for and commitment to God Himself. God asks us to do no more
than He has done Himself (John 3:16). Following Jesus means living by this
principle.
3. Commitment
Gen 22:3-12. Abraham
showed that he was willing to live by this principle of self-sacrifice. Many
others since then have left us an example to follow.
Questions
When it comes to talking
to others about Jesus, whom do we fear most, God or our friends and neighbours?
If God asks us to give up something we love or value for Him, how do we react?
Do we regard suffering as a punishment or an opportunity to prove His love and
power in our lives?
Can we be true Christians without going through trouble and pain?
