George lived at 2 Dogflood Cottages, East Street, after the death of his wife, Ann, with Charles and Eliza, their son and daughter-in-law. Charles and Eliza continued to live there until after the 1901 census. At the time of the 1891 census the (four) Dogflood Cottages were apparently located between 73 and 78 East Street. By the 1901 census ”2 Dogflood cottages, East Street” was named, or renamed, “76 East Street”.73 East Street used to be the Eagle public house. It is believed that the Dogflood cottages were located next to the Eagle, on its west side. This site is now a used-car parking lot. |

A document held by the Farnham & District Museum Society (regretfully no longer available online) gives the interesting information that Mrs Denyer (presumably Eliza) of 76 East Street was the first in line locally to receive the new old age pension on 1 Jan 1909. |

Mary and Henry Carpenter had six children: Henry, George, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, Charles, all born in Alton. Elizabeth and Ebenezer Rowland had three children: William, Adalaide and Mary, all born in Bramshott. Francis and Mary had two children: Charles and George, born in Tonbridge. Little information regarding George Denyer (b. 1827) has been found after the 1841 census. Charles and Eliza had two children: Charles Dorset Denyer and Alfred Wills Denyer. Curiously Charles Dorset is entered in the 1871 census, age 3 months, as a visitor, and without the surname Denyer. However in the 1881 census both the boys are entered as sons, aged 10 and 9 respectively. No further information about the births of these children can be found, other than the census records that they were both born in London, Middlesex. One possibility is that that they were adopted. Henrietta and James Larke had a daughter Henrietta in 1872, though curiously in the 1881 census she is recorded as their niece with surname Denyer, along with another niece, Jane Denyer, born in 1870. In this 1881 census entry a daughter Mary Wheatley Larke is entered, born in 1860 before Henrietta and James were married: she could be James’ daughter with a different mother. |
