‡ Few records can be found that can be confidently attributed to Thomas Dodson, particularly regarding his birth and marriage. His birthplace is uncertain, other than being somewhere in central London. The 1841 census states that he was not born in Surrey, and the 1851 census states his birthplace to be Norton Folgate , but this then may have been crossed out, with Surrey Lambeth written underneath. The only baptism records that can be found that are serious possibilities are both from records of churches in Surrey. Interestingly in both cases the father is Samuel Dodson. One baptism record from St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, is of a son Thomas born to Samuel Dodson, a tailor, and his wife Elizabeth. This Thomas eventually married Mary Ward, and his occupation (labourer) rules him out of contention. The other baptism record from St Mary, Lambeth, is of a son Thomas born to Samuel Dodson, a hatter, and his wife Margaret. It is noteworthy that Samuel and Margaret and their family lived in the City of London (Little Swan Alley) in 1837, which may explain why Thomas recorded his birthplace as being in that area. This second record is taken to be the correct one, although with no absolute certainty. † No record can be discovered of a marriage between Thomas Dodson and Sarah Rebecca Barlow. Sadly, Thomas’ wife, Sarah Rebecca, died when their son was 5 years old, and their son was only 19 when Thomas himself died. |
