(1) Although the marriage of William Eaton Jnr and Mary Adcock was not registered until 1855, their first child, John, was born in 1850. He was not christened, however, until 24 May 1857, along with his sister Emily and cousin Hannah Hegg. Interestingly Mary Adcock herself was not christened until 16 Jun 1850 when she was about 20 years old, while she was pregnant with John. Mary Adcock’s maiden name is confirmed by the 1851 census return when she was living with her parents and the 1861 census return when her mother, Sarah, was living with William and Mary. (2) Susannah was christened Susannah but her registered name at birth was Susan. The name Susannah was used on her marriage certificate and Hannah on her death registration. Either of the names Susannah and Hannah was used at times: see 1871 Census (Hannah) and 1881 census (Susanna). Susannah’s birth certificate confirms her mother’s maiden name as Baxter. It is very likely that Susannah was named after her maternal grandmother, Susanna Baxter. |
