After Benjamin’s mother, Mary, died his father married Sarah Hills (née Slade). Martha Slade was the daughter of Sarah’s brother John, so was Benjamin’s cousin-by-marriage, although not blood-related. Benjamin Goodman Jnr and Mary Ann Stradford had both previously been married and widowed. They lived in Southwark in 1851. Walter Levi Goodman was a merchant, following in his father’s footsteps. For most of his life he lived in St Helena, where he married his wife, Louisa. Martha and her three surviving unmarried daughters lived together in Pleasant Place, Lambeth, until after Martha’s death. After Emma’s death Louisa and Caroline lived together in New Kent Road and later in Rodney Place, Southwark. Louisa survived her sisters, and finished her life on Portsea Island. Intriguingly, in the 1841 census Martha and three of her daughters – Emma, Louisa and Martha Ann – are recorded as living in Harlington St, Lambeth. There is no mention of Benjamin. It is not clear whether or not the “Arlington St” on subsequent records is the same address (both street names existed at the time in London). |
