Elspeth’s baptismal name was Eupemea. A similar name, Euphema, was used on the 1851 census return, and Elizabeth was used on the 1861 census return. Most commonly the name Elspeth was used. No birth or baptism record can be found for Henry Graham. His census returns merely state that he was born in Scotland. That Andrew and Elspeth were his parents is deduced from the following facts. (1) Henry’s wedding certificates state that his father, Andrew Graham, was a slater by profession. (2) The witnesses at Henry’s second wedding were William and Jane Ann Graham; William was a cabinet maker from Kelso, and son of Andrew Graham, slater, as confirmed by Andrew Graham’s 1851 Scottish census return. Andrew Graham junior was a minister in the United Presbyterian Church, Crossgates, from ordination in 1853 to his death in 1886. |
