Some alternative spellings of the family surname were Pomfrey, Pomphrey, Pumpfree, Pumphery and Pumpherey. ‡ It is assumed that ‘daughter’ Betsy was actually granddaughter Elizabeth, being the illegitimate child of daughter Jane. Betsy is entered on James’ 1861 census return as a daughter aged 4, but thereafter appears on Jane’s 1871 census return as her daughter, Elizabeth, age 12. On this return Jane describes her status as unmarried. In 1878 Jane had a second illegitimate child, Julia, who sadly died a few months later. |
