A birth or baptism record for Frances (Fanny) Slaney cannot be found. It is likely that her given name was Frances, although Fanny was often used, particularly on her marriage certificate. Curiously, in the 1861 census return her name is recorded as “Ann,” and on Georgina’s baptism record it is recorded as “Annie.” The name “Frances” is used in the 1851 marriage banns, on James’ baptism record, and on her death record. Harriet’s existence is inferred from Charles’ and Fanny’s grandson Albert Henney, who as a 3 year old lived with them in 1881. The record shows him absent from his parents in 1881 but living with them ten years later. Two years before marrying Charles, Fanny Slaney bore a son, Samuel Walter Slaney, out of wedlock. He was listed as Charles’ son, with the name Walter, in the 1861 census return. On his marriage certificate, in 1871, he used the name Samuel Walter Slaney, and entered Charles Bennett, labourer, as his father. This probably meant step-father, not natural father, particularly since Samuel Walter consistently used the surname Slaney. |
