Note that James’ age in the 1841 census is shown as 20, whereas in subsequent census returns his age is shown as 32, 42, etc. This is because his age in the 1841 census was rounded to the nearest multiple of 5. It is very likely that James’ and Mary’s first son was named after James’ father, and their first daughter was named after Mary’s mother. James and his wife, and baby Samuel moved from Kentisbeare to Marylebone sometime in 1851-52. James’ younger brother William had married in London in 1842, and his family are recorded as resident there in the 1851 census. Also James’ sister Thirza married Thomas Gurdon, a soldier, at St Mary’s church, Marylebone, on 24 January 1856. The Pixy Pool cottage that James lived in in 1851 was also the home of his aunt Eleanor Ackland, who married James Lane in 1821. James Ackland’s cousin, also named James Ackland, had lived with his aunt Eleanor at Pixy Pool cottage in 1841. This cousin was the illegitimate child of Samuel Ackland’s (and Eleanor’s) sister Mary, baptised on 30 Jun 1816. Cousin James was a mason. He married Mary Tozer in 1842, and they subsequently lived in Culmstock. James and his wife Mary were buried within 10 days of each other in Nunhead Cemetery, Southwark. |
