Seven babies were christened Mary Frost in the parish church of St Mary, Kentisbeare between 1816 and 1826, as shown below: Mary Ann of John and Joanna Frost on 6 June 1816 (John was a yeoman); Mary of William and Mary Frost on 30 December 1818 (William was a yeoman); Mary Ann of Edmund and Martha Frost on 2 May 1819 (Edmund was a miller); Maria Mills of Robert and Sarah Frost on 2 January 1820 (Robert was a miller); Mary Ann of Thomas and Ann Frost on 7 Oct 1821 (Thomas was a husbandman); Mary of Robert and Lucy Frost on 28 October 1821 (Robert was a flax man); Mary Ann of Edmund and Mary Frost on 27 March 1825 (Edmund was a husbandman). Mary’s age is recorded as 29, 49, 69 in the 1851, 1871, 1891 censuses respectively, and 40, 60 in the 1861, 1881 censuses respectively. These are consistent with a birth in 1821. The marriage certificate for Mary and James in 1849 shows Robert Frost, a labourer, as Mary’s father. The only Mary Frost recorded in the 1841 census return for Kentisbeare is the daughter of Robert Frost (51) and Lucia Frost (54) but Mary’s age is problematic, recorded as either 15 or 18. James and Mary named their two firstborn Samuel and Lucy. Presumably Samuel was named after James’ father, and if so there is a case for Lucy being named after Mary’s mother. We conclude that the only position consistent with the above records is that Mary was born in October 1821 of Robert and Lucy Frost. The 1841 census return recording her mother’s name at Lucia and her age as 15 or 18 does not fit well, so this must be treated as uncertain. Mary and her husband James were buried within 10 days of each other in Nunhead Cemetery, Southwark. |
