It is very likely that the parents of John Irish (1712-1769) were John and Elizabeth Irish of Oakingham (Wokingham), which would make John a brother of David Irish (1715-1774). There is no direct documentary evidence of this, but there are two strong pointers: (1) their common occupation as surgeons; (2) the marriage of Johns daughter Frances to Davids son Thomas. Also significant may be the Wokingham connection in the marriage of John Junior to Mary Mogg. The Wokingham link makes it likely that one of the burials in Wokingham in 1759 and 1766 was of John Irishs daughter Jane. Her absence from her brother Davids will in 1793 would seem to confirm that Jane was already deceased by then. David Irish followed in his fathers footsteps in becoming a surgeon. Frances son Robert was also a surgeon, who married Marmaduke Williss daughter Jane in 1801. Sally Irishs husband, Thomas Chalcraft, was an apothecary and surgeon. An infant Frances Irish was buried at Chobham in April 1735. It is possible, therefore that John and Mary Irish had another child named Frances after this. John Irish Juniors marriage to Mary Mogg is confirmed by the fact that their first son, born in Egham, Surrey in 1765 was christened John Mog Irish. Also Marys aunt, also named Mary Mogg, in her 1766 will made mention of Marys marriage to John Irish of Egham. John and Mary baptised their first child, Mary Frances, at Egham St John on 31 May 1764. Their third child, Jane, was baptised at Wokingham All Saints on 23 Oct 1766. It is likely she was named after her aunt Jane, whose burial possibly took place at the same church just 4 days earlier. The only reference to the existence of Teresa Irish is in David Irishs Will, where she is mentioned as an unmarried sister. Follow this link for further discussion on ancestral links to the Irish family of surgeons. |
