Additional Information There are some uncertainties or discrepancies about some of Lydia and Richard’s children. The 1881 census states Jesse, aged 19, was a daughter. The 1871 census instead records a son, James, age 9. Other records are clear that Jesse was male, and there is no other evidence of Lydia and Richard having a son James. It seems most likely that the name James was actually a reference to Jesse. Another anomaly is that the 1871 census lists a daughter, Gemma, age 15. The 1861 census instead lists a daughter, Lydia, age 5. Again there is no other evidence of Lydia and Richard having a daughter Gemma. The most likely conclusion is that the name Gemma was actually a reference to Lydia. Richard John Skudder senior ran a wheelwright business from 27 Evelyn Street, Deptford, as evidenced by the London Directories. It seems clear from these directories and the 1881 and 1891 census returns that after Richard’s death in 1873 his wife Lydia Elizabeth continued to operate the business. In May 1897 Jesse William Skudder took on the lease of the Walter Arms public house, 1 Addey Street, Deptford, as recorded in the Blackheath Gazette May 14 1897, page 2. He is recorded as proprietor there in 1899 by pubwiki.co.uk. |
