Additional Information Clara was also referred to as Clare (see John’s probate text). Clara had to swear an affidavit before the probate court on 15 Aug 1832 because John Townsend’s will, made in 1810, was not properly dated. Butcher Row, Deptford, is now Borthwick Street. John Townsend (1812) was bound to William Thomas, Deptford, as apprentice lighterman on 10 Apr 1828. He received his freedom on 11 Jun 1835. William Thomas Townsend was bound to Philip Bradley, Poplar, as apprentice lighterman on 9 Jul 1829. He died before completing his apprenticeship. Robert Samuel Townsend was bound to Richard Lambert Rose, Deptford, as apprentice lighterman on 12 Jul 1832. He received his freedom on 14 Nov 1839. Robert and his wife Elizabeth are recorded as living in Greenwich in the 1851 and 1861 census returns. No evidence of any children can be found. Robert Samuel was found dead on the Maplin Sands, off Great Wakering on 18 Jul 1868. He was buried three days later at St Nicholas, Great Wakering. Strangely there was no inquest, and the death was not registered until 31 Mar 1869. Sarah Ann Townsend married Richard Lambert Rose, Thames Lighterman, on 25 March 1833, witnessed by her sister Jane Mary Townsend. In the latter part of their marriage they lived at 64 Beresford Street, Woolwich (see 1851 and 1871 census records). Lydia Elizabeth married Richard John Skudder, a wheelwright, in Jul-Sep 1844 (marriage index: Lewisham, London, v 5 p 325). They initially lived with her mother Clara at 37 Butcher Row (see 1851 census record). Jane Mary also lived there at this time, with her daughter Catherine (her husband Elias had died in 1844). |
