Additional Information 1. Sarah Ann’s husband Richard Lambert Rose was a Thames Lighterman. He served his apprenticeship from 1823 to 1830. He also acted as master in the apprenticeships of his brother-in-law Robert Samuel Townsend (1832-1839), his nephew Joseph Baldwin (1849-1856), and his own son (1853-1860). 2. Richard Lambert Rose continued to live at 64 Beresford Street, Woolwich after Sarah Ann’s death until his own death. He lived there with his grandson Richard and his niece Clara A. Skudder. 3. Sarah Ann and her husband Richard Lambert Rose were both buried in a family plot at Nunhead Cemetery. 4. The wife of Richard Lambert Rose junior was undoubtedly Mary Ann Elizabeth (née Allard) at the birth of their first child Richard in 1864, their last child Clara in 1873, and in the 1871 census. Inexplicably the name changed to Sarah Ann (2 years younger) in the 1881 census and subsequently; however no record can be found of a second marriage. Curiously a record exists of marriage banns being published at St Anne’s, Soho, London, in 1890, for Richard Lambert Rose and Sarah Ann King, but no record of actual marriage can be found. An alternative explanation to re-marriage is that Mary Ann changed her first name to Sarah. 5. Mary Ann Rose (1872-1957), the granddaughter of Richard Lambert Rose senior and Sarah Townsend, married her second cousin Alfred Pinks (1869-1951), grandson of Elias Tolman and Jane Townsend. 6. Richard Rose (1864-1885), the grandson of Richard Lambert Rose senior and Sarah Townsend, died at the age of 20. He was buried in the same plot as his grandparents at Nunhead Cemetery. |
